SOUTH YARRA HOME BY B.E. ARCHITECTURE

These two houses in Walsh Street, South Yarra are a boutique development that replace a single house. The street elevation of the building reveals two distinct masses in the form of a white render box on top of a lavastone plinth which clearly articulates the individual apartments and mitigates the scale of the building. More than that, it lends each apartment a distinct feeling, evident both inside and out.

The fundamental requirement guiding the design was the desire to have two dwellings that feel more like houses than apartments. This has been achieved through the spatial organisation of the apartments. Common areas, excluding basement, have been minimised. The result is a level of independence and privacy to each dwelling that is unexpected given the context. Both apartments have been arranged to maximise solar access, and feature multiple outdoor living spaces that double as light courts. Extensive and varied planting gives privacy to these spaces, and connects the outside with the inside.

There is an emphasis on craftsmanship throughout the construction, which is in excess of what is customary for such a development. Natural materials such as stone, wood and concrete have been used throughout, to give a sense of permanence and solidity to the building. The palette is richer than what might be expected from be architecture. It represents an extension of the sort of work for which be architecture are known, which has arisen out of careful analysis of the potential market for such a development and a way of reconciling the taste of a wider audience with a practice known for a quieter, considered aesthetic.

A HISTORIC PAUL WILLIAMS ESTATE OF 1928

Originally designed by Paul Williams, "Architect to the Stars", in 1928, this historic grand residential estate rests on several rolling acres, with streams and fountains, of Pasadena hillside. The original 1920’s Spanish Colonial design ethic guided all of our Main Residence additions and interior refurbishments, our new Guest Houses, Recreational Facilities, Cabana, Changing Rooms, Wine Cellar, Spa, landscaping and water features. Coffered and beamed wood ceilings, groin vaults, arcades, Italian tile and cast concrete mantels, walnut paneling, and turned wood furnishings evoke the essence of classic local Italianate residences and estates of the era.

MIDDLE HARBOUR HOUSE

A sculptural response to an exposed corner site overlooking Middle Harbour in Sydney builds on the materiality of the existing sandstone base to create a dramatic and layered form.  By careful manipulation of openings the substantial house achieves a balance of privacy and outlook, light and shelter, texture and warmth.  To build a house overlooking Sydney Harbour is a privilege not to be undertaken lightly.  This house strives to create a contemporary dwelling which harbours the everyday  experiences, aspirations and interactions of a family and contributes to the rich context of the populated slopes and fingers of bushland that reach into the waterway.  The site is exposed to two road frontages, and slopes substantially to the east.  The form responds to this dramatic corner site with a stratified assembly overlaid by a simple skillion roof that mirrors the slope of the land.  The stepping form creates terraces which extend the indoor living areas to the outside, creating sheltered places of prospect.  The solidity of the mass is eroded by a central double height space, allowing light to permeate through the stairwell to the lower ground floor.  The warm, substantial character of the dwelling is carefully composed by means of the clarity of detailing, a palette of tactile natural materials and the careful manipulation of light. The building aspires to beauty, substance and place making in order to provide a vessel in which a family can grow.
